A small trick-or-treat bucket can become a cheerful decoration for a porch or covered patio. This version adds flowing tails and a removable battery light, so you can put the bucket back to use next year.

What you’ll need
- One lightweight translucent plastic pumpkin bucket with a sturdy handle
- Orange, black, and white ribbons or strips of lightweight fabric
- Strong clear tape or outdoor-safe adhesive dots
- One battery-powered LED puck light or LED tea light
- Fishing line or outdoor-safe twine
- Optional: reflective tape or paper cutouts for extra detail
See the process
Follow these four visual milestones, then use the detailed steps below as you work.
How to make it
- Clean the bucket. Wash and dry it fully. Check that the handle is firmly attached.
- Cut the tails. Cut 12–18 ribbon or fabric strips, each about 18–24 inches long. Mix widths and colors for movement.
- Attach the tails. Tape one end of each strip to the outside bottom of the bucket, spreading them around the edge. Add a second piece of tape over each end for strength. The strips should flow below the bucket when you lift it by its handle.
- Add the glow. Place a battery-powered LED inside the bucket. A translucent bucket lets the light show through. Never use a candle or any flame.
- Hang it securely. Tie twine to the handle and hang it from a sheltered hook. Test it in a light breeze; if it swings too much, shorten the cord or move it indoors.
Easy variations
Use white fabric strips for a ghostly look, add a name tag to each bucket, or group three buckets at different heights. A covered entryway protects paper and fabric details from rain.
Creative twist
For a color-changing porch display, attach the ribbons with removable tape tabs and swap the colors for different occasions. Slip a reflective strip among the ribbons so the decoration catches nearby light even when the LED is off.
Time: About 25 minutes. Safety: Keep button batteries and loose cords away from young children. Bring the decoration inside during strong wind or rain.
